Weekly Sport
Years 5-8
Sport is
compulsory in Years 5-8. Students take swimming lessons for at least one term a
year. We believe it is very important for students to learn how to swim at a
young age. It also makes sense to make use of the swimming pool we have on site.
For the two winter terms, the classes play hockey and soccer in the Canterbury
Primary Sports weekly tournament. The Year 5-8 Sport programme is currently
under review.
Years 9-10
Students in Years 9-10 must be involved in sport, but they may choose to do this
outside school. Students who are involved in a sports team outside school do not
have to participate in school sport; for all other students, school sport is
compulsory. Where possible, we enter teams into local competitions. Terms 2-3 are also
spent preparing students to enter a team in the SPARC Get 2 Go Challenge, an
outdoor adventure team event involving rock climbing, kayaking, orienteering and
mountain biking. The Sport programme at Year 9/10 is under development as our
numbers grow.
Annual Events
Swimming
Students all
compete in our annual swimming sports day in Term 1 at our on-site swimming
complex. The three houses – Aspiring, Cook and Tasman – all play a big part in
this fixture which is always a fun day for all who take part.
Athletics
Our Year 9-10
students compete in the Middleton Grange School senior athletics day. This
provides our students with a high level of competition and is an excellent
opportunity for the group to foster relationships with Middleton Grange School
students.
Cross-Country
Cross-country is
one of the more important events on our sports calendar. We believe we have one
of the best cross-country tracks in Christchurch and we are aiming to raise the
profile of the sport in our school. Our track starts at the back of the school
grounds and takes runners through bush, over a river and across farmland before
returning them to the school soccer field.
Early in Term 2,
all students take part in the school cross-country. Of course the three houses,
Aspiring, Tasman and Cook, all try to gain points in this event.
Triathlon
This is now an annual event through which the school
community celebrates the year and the house competition is decided.
Student Feedback
Here are some
comments that pupils made about sports events in 2009:
Sport this year as been
tons of fun!
Even when not playing,
encouraging the others was fun!
We have had lots of ups
and downs but we have worked hard as a team.
It was fun because it
gave us an opportunity to mingle with other schools.
I enjoyed the practise
for Get 2 Go because we had to work our hardest.
We have achieved so much
in sport for such a small school.
Everyone tried their best
and it was certainly memorable.
